Type: The New School + George Brecht

Artist: George Brecht

Description: George Brecht in 1956 wrote an essay about chance operations in visual art and sent it to John Cage. At the time, Brecht was a chemist for Johnson & Johnson. Cage replied to Brecht’s letter by asking him to join him and David Tudor on a mushroom hunt. Brecht joined him and enrolled in his class at the New School (Pearlman 62). George Brecht met George Maciunas, La Monte Young, Dick Higgins and Mac Low. The environment encouraged students to break out of traditional molds.
