About: This beloved West Village spot used to be the place to go for all night jam sessions, surprise appearances by jazz celebrities. Here, jazz musicians whether stars or students would play alongside each other without judgement (Dollar 31). The crowd was humble being that it was a small venue - 10$ cover charge and cheap drinks, this was the place to be for an organic and authentic jazz experience (Dollar 31). The Smalls energy before the close was much different than the re-surged venue. The community prior to the close. Before, Smalls was more of a lifestyle - musicians would eat, sleep and breathe smalls - now it is more of a regular club. However, the talent still thrives and it is a place to be seen for upcoming jazz artists (Dollar 33). Dollar, Steve. Jazz Guide - NYC. 2nd ed. New York: Little Bookroom, 2004. Print.
