Walking tour stop description: Carl Fischer, a musician who emigrated from Germany in 1872, established his music store selling instruments, sheet music and arrangements, initially on East 4th Street, then on Fourth Avenue, and finally in the 12-story building on Cooper Square since 1923. The company, Carl Fischer Music, is still in business, and moved from its former headquarters the year that Binkowski published Musical New York. Now the company is based nearby at 65 Bleecker Street.
