My quest for dead-zones…
As I began my project, I attempted to compare the AT&T’s official coverage in the city of New York with my field work. I had originally intended to do the following (excerpt from my Individual proposal):
a) Define the dead zones in Manhattan.
b) Provide, as best as I can, a numerical value to the coverage zones in order to show that in these “orange zones”, there are also divergences depending on which block you are at or next to.
c) Optional: Figuring out if in these dead or almost dead zones, these urban dwellers either are wanting to text, surf the web or call.
I then realized during my field work that my original plan was not going to be feasible. Dead-zones were not definite as they might be dead-zones at once but not necessarily ten minutes later. Therefore the project evolved into a record of signal strength at given locations, creating a real world signal strength map. The information recorded goes beyond the generic 3G titles and shows the quality of the connection and its correlation with data transfer.
