EDISON AND THE EARLY ELECTRIFICATION OF NEW YORK CITY

The Growth of the Edison Company's reach

These documents, published in the Edison Company's somewhat regular company bulletins give lists of independent structures serviced by the company. These are buildings (or ships, in some cases) that were not at the time connected to ay power grid, but, rather, had their own power stations nearby or on the same property that were operated independently. Especially in the early years of the Edison Illuminating Company's work, many buildings were simply too far from the Pearl Street Central Station and so could not be connected to it.

The structures within New York City are highlighted in these documents, but on can also begin to get a sense of the nationwide and global reach and aspirations of Edison's company, even in those early years.

The entries highlighted in these documents are correlated on the map in the records listed below (note: the records present on the map are not comprehensive; work must still be done to create a full set of records, as well as to find the precise locations of some of the buildings mentioned in the documents.)
