Memories as Creators of Legends

J.SON said it best on our interview: “You have no idea if they’re telling the truth”. There is a strong storytelling tradition within the graffiti movement, from the very start of subway graffiti writing until now. Not only did the trains serve as a form of visual communication and creators of kings and queens of the train lines, but the stories of writers have also served as a communications tool to create graffiti legends. Within these memories, there may be many examples of revisionists’ history. Or they may be fairly accurate. On occasion it’s possible to fact check by closely examining photos, or cross referencing stories. Otherwise, these stories, irregardless of “truth”, paint a rich picture of the characters involved in shaping the subway graffiti movement. The boasts of greatness reflect a graffiti writer’s drive toward innovating better styles, and showcase their core purpose in writing in the first place: a thirst for fame and recognition.
